Imagine planes landing right in Downtown Gilbert! It’s a scary thought, but between 1946 and 1959, it was a common sight to see small planes taking off and landing right near Gilbert & Warner. Gilbert had its very own airport where Mesquite Jr. High’s pool currently sits. The airport, with it’s packed-dirt runway, was built by Bill Mastin and Joseph Wilbur. Crop-dusting was the primary activity at the airfield. In 1959, the Gilbert Unified School District purchased part of the airport’s land to open a new school. Despite this, Mr. Mastin continued using the runway for his crop-dusting business until the early 1960s.
